This interview was done with Mingus, the kick ass bass player (he's really good at bass) of Catch 22. This interview took place outside of a cold Lupo's on Tax Day 2005 as I was trying to stop from shivering.
PL: Introduce yourself.
C22: I'm Mingus, the bass player for Catch 22.
PL: Is it difficult to make band decisions with so many members?
C22: Absolutely. Sometimes it is. Usually, someone grins and bears it. People sometimes have to make unilateral decisions without consulting everyone, but you really try to get everybody involved. We are all even partners.
PL: Do you think any band should feel bitter if a band member quits and starts another band?
C22: Its bound to happen if they play music.
PL: I just see so many guys quit one band and start another one soon after.
C22: Oh, yeah, well thats bound to happen. This band has actually broken up and rejoined two weeks later without one dude. But, nowadays, we just like to wait people out until they quit.
SL: Did you ever boot people out of the band?
C22: No, only that one incident that I spoke of, and it wasn't necessarily a vote; it just happened.
PL: The first time I heard you guys was on a Victory sampler in between Hatebreed and some other hardcore band. Did you feel like an outcast when you first signed to Victory?
C22: Outcast-partially. We were more like black sheep for a little while. But, at the same time, we got some special attention because we were so different sounding. We kind of opened up Victory a little bit. Victory is a powerhouse right now with the bands they have; they've grown by leaps and bounds. Right about when we joined was about the time when they started opening up to some different genres. I think that it was a cool time for them and a cool time for us.
PL: Do you guys still feel like a black sheep at all?
C22: Nah, not at all. We feel like the old heads right now. All of these kid bands coming through and making all of their money.
PL: Are you the oldest band on the label now?
C22: I can't be sure. Is Earth Crisis still going?
PL: Are you excited about the baseball season this year?
C22: I'm not as excited about it as Kevin is. Kevin, out trumpter player, is a huge Mets' fan and he swears that, with Pedro, they're gonna do it this year. I personally don't think so. I did get to see a game this year. I got to see the Reds season opener against the Mets. We all went as a team and checked it out. As a team-get it?
PL: Is it tough to get your taxes done on the road?
C22: Its impossibe. I don't even know if mine got sent in today. I gave them to my accountant. We had a day off the other day and I went home and quickly filed some things and went in. Its not like my taxes are that much, but I may even get a rebate this year.
PL: Whats the biggest white person stereotype you can think of?
C22: Um...(long pause)
PL: You can skip it if you want to.
C22: I'll come back to it.
PL: Name one album, besides your own, that you think all kids should have in their collection.
C22: Every kid, ever?
PL: Anyone who would read this.
C22: Oh, reading kids. Well, the reading kids should probably-at this point should probably be issued Green Day's new record. They're hot shit right now. The kids should just be issued them on the street. It should be like school where they'll give out condoms, they'll give out an abstinence flyer and they'll give out the new Green Day record.
PL: Do you have any final comments?
C22: If you like us, please check out our new DVD. I'm real proud of it. I got to do a little production and mixing and engineering work. We're working on a new record right now that will hopefully be out this summer. We'll be out on tour again and thats it. We might be working on the new record in my own personal studio.
PL: So, with the DVD, you did all of the sound engineering?
C22: Yeah. Victory's first surround sound release.
On our way back in to the club, Mingus remembered that he didn't mention the biggest white person stereotype. He said that "they're all crackers," and wanted me to emphasize the "THEY'RE ALL."
