I met Rob through his (now) ex-girlfriend a few years ago. He loved metal and I always got a kick out of the insane amount of Dying Fetus shirts that he had. Chan thought that his name was Scott for the longest time. Now that Chan knows his name, Rob took off to Florida for school. He comes back once in awhile, although I never end up seeing him. He started a label called City of Hell with Mullet, who is a tattoo artist at Art Freek. They released the first Daughters 7" and have since rereleased the first As the Sun Sets album.

This interview is of poor grammer with little to no capitalization or punctuation because this is how people instant message each other and I was too lazy to edit everything. I decided to make an attempt to smash quality into the ground, although this is still a pretty good interview.

PL: hey; can i interview you for my website?

coh: yeah if you want a really boring interview sure

PL: okay...i just thought of this now, so everything is coming off of the top of my head, so they'll be boring questions too

PL: NAME: of yourself and record label you do

COH: Robert 'hairbag' Chase

City Of Hell Records

PL: when did you start the label? why? with who?

COH: we started in June i think of 2002, after sitting on our asses for the majority of our lives. I guess the impending release of the Daughters 7" is what actually motivated us to do this, we knew it would be an amazing piece of vinyl.....the label consists of Brian 'mullet' mullen, Ryan 'midlife crisis' Fogarty, and myself

PL: okay...you're the only one not living in Rhode Island. why is that? does that make it hard to do anything?

COH: I left to go to school at Full Sail in Florida for recording, which i just completed....It makes it difficult for me to get copies of our friggin records, as I have to rely on Mullet to mail them to me....so it takes a while.....but things are ok up there without me, they can handle it. I know the record stuffing parties just aren't the same without me though....now I am getting married next month and will be having a kid sometime in late July. We are planning to move back up north, hopefully sooner than later We are looking to open a studio in Providence, Mullet and I, so that is a huge source of anticipation and excitement

PL: what was school in florida like?

PL: what are your immediate plans before you move up north?

COH: School was pretty rad....we had classes around the clock, we got to work on some incredible equipment that i doubt i will ever touch again, and i made some amazing friends. But i think i have learned the most recording bands at my house, where i have to figure shit out on my own as opposed to having someone there. overall it has been a great experience...............immediate plans- i am working at whole foods and recording bands whenever i can, that is about it. going to shows and acquiring strange instruments that i dont know how to play

PL: what kinds of instruments?

COH: Um......we have a didjeridoo, a cello, a mandolin, and an assortment of guitars that i also cant play. keyboards....shit these aren't that weird at all...

PL: what bands have you been recording?

I have recorded The Color Of Violence, and mostly some smaller local bands, Another Broken Promise, A Game Of You, Deconstructionist, and we had a house show that I recorded Escape Grace's set for...other than that just some stuff with friends and Andrea

PL: are any of these bands going to end up on City of Hell?

COH: Aside from Escape Grace, who we are doing a CD/LP with, its doubtful...though i do dig Deconstructionist a lot....

PL: why did you guys decide to release a Daughters 7" first? were any other bands in the running?

COH: no, we had talked about doing a label, but knowing that they were going to be recording soon and that we could be a part of it, we decided to give it a go and spend most of Mullet's money and a little of mine

PL: good plan. hows running a record label different from recording a band (besides the obvious)

COH: with a label there isn't a lot that i can fuck up.....we get the music, the art, the talent....unless we never advertise (oops) or never update our website (oops), its a pretty straight shot, just need to get distribution, and now that Ryan has done a kick ass job of getting us stable in that aspect, we are doing pretty well........when i'm recording however, i could delete something, not have the right equipment, stupid shit like that...pretty easy to avoid, but it happens. Plus i have to be creative and resourceful, which is intimidating but also fun. Overall though, if they don't like it, its my fault

PL: whats your (and all your friends) obsession with being naked?

COH: I think it is an underlying air of homosexuality. we have fucking issues i guess man......its our way of being close and showing of true love and affection for one another without dropping the tuff guy facade. we're naked but we'll fuck you up

PL: any naked stories you'd care to forget?

COH: yes

haha thats all you get

PL: what would you say has been the best thing to happen to you so far in life?

COH: The last few months have been incredible-I am marrying an amazing girl and I am going to be a father soon...it is so much to comprehend, and it has opened my eyes up to a completely different way of life. Things are going better for me now than I ever could have imagined

PL: do you think that having a wife and child will have a negative effect on your recording and record label efforts?

COH: nope. its not something that i do alone, or even do shit for as far as actual work goes right now. recording can be pretty demanding, but Andrea is incredibly accomodating and understanding. But to tell you the truth...I don't know for sure. Everything about my life now is a new experience. i think it will be no problem though

PL: right now, i can barely feel my hands due to the january cold. whats the weather like in florida?

and how will you again adapt to the cold winter once you move back up north?

COH: its like 70 here. super nice. the weather up there is what i am used to though....this shit is way too hot. i am looking forward to being bac home

PL: how did the as the sun sets reissue come about?

COH: the guys i think were a little bummed out that kids were paying ridiculous amounts of money for the original press, so we all decided it would be a good idea. it has done great.

PL: where are there better shows: florida or RI/MA?

COH: i have been to a ton better shows up north....there is a much better metal scene up there, any show down here usually consists of cannibal corpse.....yeah i miss it

PL: what bands are you currently listening to?

COH: Nick Cave, Cryptopsy, Escape Grace, Brother Ali, Disrupt, Structure Of Lies, Ryan Adams(heartbreaker)

PL: when's city of hell gonna put out a pop punk band?

COH: haha, i dont know man, Mullet is the punker sorta guy.....your band kicks some ass though, ill have to admit i have had a song in my head since you sent me that cd

PL: haha...that was just my little meager attempt at being funny

anything else you feel like saying?

COH: go to hxcmp3.com, search for City Of Hell. then search for Crippler Crossface. Then Robs House. then make your way over to city666.com.

PL: which one has your penis on it?

COH: Crippler.....well until mullet sees it im sure. yes, go look at my lumpy penis.
