I was very interested in hearing Haste the Day with a new singer, but the traffic and lack of parking due to Nine Inch fucking Nails prevented that. Anyway, this interview was conducted with drummer (I don't get the opportunity to interview enough drummers) Devin Chaulk on March 10, 2006 at the Worcester Palladium.
PL: State your name and favorite childhood cartoon.
DC: My name is Devin Chaulk and I play drums in Haste the Day. My favorite childhood cartoon was "The Flintstones."
PL:
Do you enjoy talking about your band in interviews?
DC: Yeah. I think its fun. I enjoy sharing-its something that important to me, so I don't mind.
PL: How has gaining a new vocalist changed the dynamics of the band?
DC: Its really interesting: it feels like a brand new band. That says nothing about Jimmy, as far as his part of the band. It was great having him in the band, and it was sad to see him go, but introducing someone new to the band really does change the whole dynamics of everything. The thing with Stephen is that he hasn't done a whole lot of touring, so he's kind of fresh and kind of new to this, so he hasn't been jaded and all of that. He comes in really excited, and when I get bummed out about touring things, he says that he doesn't really care and that he's just excited to be touring, and thats probably the right attitude to have. He's brought a bit of a freshness to the group that wasn't there before.
PL: Are you going to get sick of talking about having a new singer for the next five or six months?
DC: Thats funny because thats gonna be new news to people for a long time, but for us, its our everyday lives, so its almost not new to me now because we've played so many shows with him. Its only been since January-I know that seems stupid of me to say its not new to us, but its funny because we've seen him and jammed with him almost everyday since January until now, and we've played 50 shows with him, so its old news for us.
PL: Do you worry about crowd reactions when being an opening band on a tour like this?
DC: Yeah, we definitely think about it. We hope that we can win the crowd over; thats the fun part. We kind of find that fun-going out and playing to a new crowd, and this is definitely a new crowd for us, playing for Bleeding Through's fans. Its something we think about a lot, and we just go out and play our best and do the very best we can and hope that kids will enjoy it.
PL: Have the reactions been good?
DC: The reactions have been awesome. Its been very cool and we've been really encouraged. We've just been having a lot of fun with the kids on this tour. Its been great.
PL: Whats the best way to cure boredom when you're not on tour?
DC: I watch a lot of TV on DVD. I hang out with my girlfriend. I hang out with my mom and dad, and I just relax and watch a lot of TV.
PL: Whats one book everyone should read?
DC: Growing up, I really liked the book "Animal Farm" by George Orwell. That was a great book. Its either that or Dr. Seuss.
PL: State a little known fact about Every Time I Die.
DC: They're not the party animals everybody thinks they are.
PL: Why do you think nobody really pays attention to the drummer?
DC: Probably because he's in the back. He's hard to see. If he's doing his job right, depending on what type of band he's in, if he's doing well and playing solid, then you don't really notice him. There are a lot of drummers that play really flashy, and they get noticed. Thats okay, but its not my style. I just sit back and play my stuff and do the best I can.
PL: What musician is less respected: the bassist or the drummer?
DC: I think its a toss up. They're both really overlooked. Everybody loves the guitar player with all the solos, and the singer, of course. The drummer and bass player kind of fall through the cracks. The most important stuff, I think.
PL: Name one album, besides your own, you think all kids should have in their collection.
DC: Thats such a great question. These aren't normal questions. I usually breeze through these. We really like pop rock. We really think that rock bands are awesome. We like Bon Jovi, Journey, Def Leopard, all the way to the Goo Goo Dolls, Foo Fighters and bands like that. It would have to be one of those: a good rock and roll that sings well and plays well.
PL: Do you have any final comments?
DC: We're getting ready to write a new album. We're getting ready to go out on tour with It Dies Today in the month of June, so check us out. Come see Stephan Keech on this tour. God Bless You All.
