Hell Within seem like very appreciative dudes who are so happy to be able to make music and play it for people. You could hear their excitement in both their songs when they played Metal Fest on Sunday, April 24, and during this interview. You have to root for the good guys.
PL: Start by introducing yourselves.
TZ: I'm Tony Zimmerman, guitarist.
IM: Isaisas Martinez and I play guitar.
PL: Whats the best thing about giant festivals like this?
TZ: Especially for us right now, its our first appearance in front of everybody with the new album and all the new material, so its good. It kind of gives the new album a jump start because it comes out this Tuesday (April 26), and now everyone's heard the product, so they'll go buy it. Its cool to be around the other people and all the great bands. Basically, this is the open door. We get all the exposure that we need to be successful. Anybody and everybody are here.
PL: Does having a 12:40 start time hurt any?
TZ: We've been doing this for awhile, and we're just grateful to have the opportunity. We're just grateful to start and everyone's given us the chance to play. Plus, we would have played first. Just as long as we got to play, we were happy. Then again, we are a new band, so we're expected to play early.
PL: Was it difficult to get your name out after you changed the name, or did you just clean the slate and start totally fresh?
TZ: We kind of cleaned the slate and started fresh. As far as we're concerned, this is the original line up. Back in the days with our past band, I was learning what we should do and what we shouldn't do, and making all the mistakes. We still make mistakes, but this lineup: we all get along, we're all friends. Yeah, we've messed up here and there, but we've all got the same vision. So, as far as we're concerned, this is the original line up, and the past really doesn't matter anymore.
IM: With this lineup, we're all focused on one thing, which is the same style. Before, with past members, it'd be so diverse with different styles that we couldn't really focus in on anything. This time, we've got the same vision, like he said.
PL: Is it difficult being on a record label from a different country?
TZ: Not really, because the owner, Stefan, is really there for us and is really good to us. Yeah, its an indie label, but they do everything that they can for us. They bust their ass, and they just opened their United States office with Drew, and Drew fucking busts his ass for us and he's really good to us. Hey, they got us on this festival.
IM: They do all that, and they also have major label distribution. Victory Records does our distro.
PL: Whats a little known fact about Massachusetts?
TZ: We a bunch of assholes. We suck. I don't know, man; Isaias is probably better for this one.
IM: We're really pissed off, basically.
PL: Name one album, besides your own, that you think all kids should have in their collection.
TZ: As far as the legends go and the people who influenced me, you've got to go Reign in Blood by Slayer. Who cares whatever they did recently; if I could say that I wrote Master of Puppets, it'd be awesome.
IM: I've got to go with Megadeth Rust in Peace.
PL: Do you have any final comments?
TZ: Buy our shit. We're starving, poor musicians. Buy our stuff, and we just thank everyone for their support. As long as people keep coming, keep buying, just wait until the next fucking album.
