Lamb of God is the first major label band that I have itnerviewed. Epic is releasing their album, "Ashes of the Wake," features guest appearances by Chris Poland of Megadeth and Alex Skolnick, formerly of Testament. This should be a really good album, and hopefully you'll enjoy the interview almost as much.
1. Introduce yourself any way you want.
Chris Adler, drummer- LAMB OF GOD.
2. From what you've noticed, whats the difference between an indie label and a major one?
There are so many differences, it's hard to say. In theory you would expect the people working at indies to know and feel the music and to support their bands in a way a major might not. You expect the major to be a bunch of suits in meetings and no one really knows who you are anymore. We have been very fortunate in our experiences with labels - including our new label, Epic. There are very dedicated people that are very good at what they do that build relationships with and for the band helping any way they can. The biggest difference from the outside looking in is probably distro. We have gone from distro out of the back of our van to the Sony system in the past 10 years and there is obviously a considerable difference in what a record can do given those circumstances. We are very excited about the new record Ashes of the Wake and we now have possibly the best distribution possible. It's a very exciting time for us.
3. Talk a bit about the DVD and the process of making a DVD.
The DVD is primarily a collection of footage we have taken ourselves on the road over the past few years. We decided to use a production DVD format that allowed for a very low cost retail sale. This is important for us because we hate the idea of ripping off our fans. With the format allowing us to keep price down to $9.99 we weren't able to do the typical 4 hour DVD, but we packed in what we could with some live stuff and some funny and humiliating behind the scenes footage. This DVD is straight from our cameras, nothing staged or rock star abut it. It's us at our best and worst and hopefully gives a good picture of what we are all about to anyone who might be interested.
4. Are band DVDs becoming a new cliche? Why or why not?
I think it's becoming more common because the technology and production facilities are now available to make it easier for record labels to offer this as an additional piece of a bands catalog. Some are certainly better than others, but for a fan of any band, it's a nice way to put a visual to it all.
5. If there is one aspect of your playing that you could improve upon, what would it be?
I've noticed in this band that there is a drive to always grow and improve on both the individual level and as a band. We are far from content to 'let it ride' just because we have a certain number of fans. We want to be able to look back when it's all over and know that we were the best we could be at what we do. So far, we are very proud.
6. Do bands need the press to be successful?
It depends, some bands refuse interviews and try to put themselves in a unreachable place and do just fine. We appreciate the idea that people might be interested in what we have to say and are flattered to be asked. Sometimes it can make for a long day, but in the end we'd rather have that avenue of connection with our fans and friends.
7. Whats your greatest non-musical accomplishment?
Getting married to the greatest woman I've ever met in my life.
8. Name one album (besides your own) that kids should have in their record collection.
Peace Sells...but who's buying?
9. Are you going to vote in this upcoming election?
Yes.
10. Final comments...
