This interview with Moments in Grace was supposed to be in person when they played with Hot Water Music on November 12. It didn't quite work out that way, as I couldn't find Jake after initially talking with him. I realized that this was a good thing after I was typing the interview questions to send via Email and I realized how stupid some of them were. I omitted some, and I think the interview turned out better because of it. I guess things do happen for a reason.
1. Introduce yourself.
I'm Jake Brown and I'm the bassist of Moments in Grace.
2. Whats the difference between being on Salad Days and being on Atlantic?
Our producer and friend Brian McTernan is the person that runs Salad Days, and he kind of has us under his wing because we're on his imprint. But we still get to deal with the people at Atlantic on a daily basis as well. I think the only difference is that if we were just on Atlantic proper-we wouldn't be dealing with Brian at all.
3. Do you consider this band a job?
Yes, I do - but not in a negative way. It's been great, we've been able to do enough to sustain ourselves on the road which I think is the goal of every band. It's definitely the most fun job imaginable.
4. Favorite sport?
Basketball, I used to play a lot when I was in middle school and high school. Then I discovered the guitar.
5. Do you like playing shows with such diverse bands that you played with during the Hot Water Music tour? Do you think a lot more package tours should include diversity?
I absolutely love the lineup we have on this tour. It is extremely diverse, but I feel like all of us work together so well. The crowds have been very receptive to the lineup as well. As a personal preference, I enjoy shows much more if there is a wide array of music going on. Who wants to hear 4 bands that all sound exactly the same back to back?
6. A story recently broke out about a 29 year old woman who was having a relationship with an 8 year old boy. Is this sad or funny?
That's a pretty touchy subject, I honestly couldn't really find that to be funny based on the fact that I have had a lot of close friends that were molested when they were children. All of them still have problems dealing with those experiences in their adult lives too. So no, definitely not in the category of funny.
7. Was hair metal really that bad of a trend?
It's a funny trend to reflect on, maybe one of the funnier to ever exist. I think the whole commercialized "emo" thing is going to be another trend that will be funny in retrospect, give it a couple of years. A year or two ago sixteen magazine ran an article on "what is emo?" and gave guidelines for dressing and attitude...my best friend tore out the article and I have it tucked away so that I can look back and laugh.
8. Do you have a prediction for the next four years?
Hopefully somewhere down the line we'll grace the cover of sixteen. In all seriousness though, I see us touring like crazy and recording a follow-up to Moonlight Survived.
9. Name one album, besides your own, that you think all kids should have in their collection.
Hard question, just because there are probably 10 different ones that I wish everyone had. I'll have to go with the Frodus album "And we Washed Our Weapons in the Sea..." just because it's probably the most underrated album to come out in years.
10. Final comments.
Thank you for the interview, we appreciate the support that you're giving us. Hopefully we'll see you and everyone reading this again on tour soon.
