Jake Gyllenhaal Sings In First Footage From Broadway Musical ‘Sunday In The Park With George’ Directed By Cary Fukunaga

With the success of “La La Land,” I won’t be surprised to see many more actors giving singing a whirl, and if you’re in New York City, you’ll have a chance to see Jake Gyllenhaal do just that in “Sunday In The Park With George.” The actor is gearing up to hit the Broadway stage to belt it out for a few weeks, and the first footage proves he’s got a pretty good voice.

Cary Fukunaga is directing the production of the Stephen Sondheim-penned story, inspired by George Seurat’s famous painting, “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte,” about an artist struggling to find his voice, and the dissolving relationship with his lover. And Gyllenhaal does good work belting out the number, “Finishing the Hat.”

However, if you’re already wondering about the actor’s Tony Award chances, forget about it. The producers have already announced they will not be putting “Sunday In The Park With George” up for consideration, and it’s largely believed they can’t spare the financial cost of showing the musical to voters for free, when the production is only playing in a limited run for a couple of months.

“Sunday In The Park With George” starts previews on February 11th, and officially runs from February 23rd until April 23rd. [Variety]
