This afternoon seems to be all about actresses shaking things up a bit. First there’s Claire Foy moving into the pole position to play Lisbeth Salander in “The Girl In The Spider’s Web,” now comes Gina Rodriguez taking on a gritty role in an ambitious remake.
Deadline reports that “Jane The Virgin” star has signed up to lead Catherine Hardwicke‘s remake of Gerardo Naranjo‘s “Miss Bala.” Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. has penned the script for this new iteration that will see Rodriguez playing Gloria Meyer, who is drawn into the underworld when her friend disappears in Tijuana. Newcomer Ismael Cruz Córdova will play a master manipulator that Rodriguez will have to contend with.
It’s an intriguing creative team, and we’ll be curious to see how this follows in the footsteps of Naranjo’s nerve-rattling thriller. No word yet on when filming will begin, but the project is set up at Sony and I’d imagine it’ll get rolling soon.
