Jill Soloway Leaving 'Transparent' As Showrunner

Update: An interview with Soloway in the Hollywood Reporter has clarified the situation: in fact, while she’s always had an overseeing role, she hasn’t been showrunner since since one, with Bridget Bedard holding that title for the past three seasons. “I was always overseeing everything, but in terms of the title of showrunner, that was Bridget Bedard’s,” Soloway told the trade. “For season five, Jill Gordon’s going to be doing the job that Bridget Bedard was doing. Because I also direct and write and I’m an executive producer, I have a lot of things to do that make it so I actually need a showrunner to collaborate with, at my side. I’m still as involved as ever.”

And Soloway says that she’ll be involved in the show as long as it runs. “I could never leave the show in a million years. I’m going to be in it — writing, directing, living, loving, laughing, learning — every day until the very last day that it’s on.” Good news, then, and our apologies for the error.

It’s clearly a time of upheaval over at Amazon. As the streaming service attempts to catch up to market leader Netflix and fend off Hulu, who are surging post-“Handmaid’s Tale,” they look to be mixing things up – cancelling their two F. Scott Fitzgerald shows over the weekend, while commissioning a host of new series from established names like “Master Of None” co-creator Alan Yang, “The Office” showrunner Greg Daniels, the duo behind “How I Met Your Mother,” and even Wong Kar-Wai.

It’s an increasingly hefty line-up when you also factor in their upcoming shows from David O. Russell, Matthew Weiner and Nicolas Winding Refn, but what do the changes mean for established shows at the network? Well, the timing’s probably coincidental, but it’s just been announced that the network’s most critically acclaimed series, the multi-Emmy-winning “Transparent,” is losing its creator – with the news in Deadline that Jill Gordon will replace Jill Soloway as showrunner on the series.

Gordon’s a TV writing veteran with credits including “My So-Called Life,” “The Wonder Years” and most recently, short-lived medical drama “Heartbeat.” But don’t stress too much if you’re a fan of the show and of Soloway. She’ll still be involved in the series – writing, directing and executive producing episodes of next year’s Season 5 – she just won’t be day-to-day running the series.

Indeed, Soloway’s found something of a home at the streaming service: a second show, the great “I Love Dick,” is awaiting a second-season pick-up; she’s producing a potential pilot about female rodeo riders during World War Two; and she’s developing a movie, “Ten Aker Wood,” with Amazon Studios.

Indeed, if we were betting men and women, we’d’ wager that she’s easing off the day-to-day “Transparent” duties in order to focus on a feature, though that’s purely speculation. Either way, there should be no reason for fans to worry, but even if there was, there’s still a whole other season of Soloway-run “Transparent” to come: Season 4 debuts on Amazon on September 22nd.
