"Project X" star Jonathan Daniel Brown, Kellan Lutz and Nina Dobrev are set to star in John Stockwell's "Kid Cannabis," a rags-to-riches drug tale based on a 2005 Rolling Stone article that follows an impoverished, depressed high school dropout who quickly finds himself managing a multi-million dollar marijuana smuggling operation across the Idaho-Canada border.
Brown will play the 18-year-old lead, Nate Norman, who soon finds the feds on his tail, with Lutz as his mate who chases the thrill while Dobrev will play the daughter of a pot-grower who has a thing for the best friend. The success of "Game Of Thrones" must be so bittersweet for Sean Bean who has been unable to ride its momentum. The actor is now set to move onto another novel adaptation, though, in South African author Dean Meyer's 'Devil's Peak' trilogy. The story centers on Griessel, a detective with Cape Town’s Serious and Violent Crimes Unit and a recovering alcoholic with family issues and other demons who is, of course, very good at catching murderers. A September shoot is being eyed presumably for the first novel "Devil's Peak" which is followed by "Thirteen Hours" and "7 Days." Not exactly HBO but, in our eyes, Bean will always be a winner as the man who was stabbed outside a bar, refused to seek medical attention and went back in for another drink instead. [ScreenDaily]
"Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol" actress Paula Patton will star in Fox Searchlight's "Baggage Claim" which sees David Talbert directing from his own 2003 novel. Compared to Tyler Perry, Talbert has a strong following in the black community after years of touring his plays and with this project is hoping to transfer his stage success to the silver screen, where "urban-themed" films like "Think Like A Man" are major box office perfomers. In the film, Patton plays flight attendant Montana Moore, who at 35 is the oldest woman in her family not married. With her sister tying the knot, Montana and her fellow flight attendants become determined to put a claim check on a husband in 30 days or 30,000 miles. [Deadline]
The revitalized Shirley MacLaine — who features on "Downton Abbey" and stars opposite Jack Black in Richard Linklater's "Bernie" — is set to star in revisionist fairy tale "Mother Goose." She'll play the title character, the Queen of a fantasy fairyland in which siblings Jack and Jill navigate the magical kingdom to figure out three riddles that will allow them to return home and get a hold of a key held by Mother Goose herself. Rory Culkin (younger bro to Macauley and Kieran) will star in AFI grad Lou Howe's "Gabriel," the story of a troubled teen who goes off his meds and quests through NY to find his first kiss. Culkin will play the titular character with Matt Czuchry ("The Good Wife") portraying his brother who must deal with Gabriel's constantly shifting moods. Luckily, looking troubled and on-edge are part of the Culkin genes. [Variety]
