'Westworld' Team Explains Why They Won't Go For George R.R. Martin's 'Game Of Thrones' Crossover Idea

After only three episodes, fan theories are already coming out of every corner of the internet for “Westworld.” HBO‘s sci-fi series has certainly captured the imagination in a big way, and the conceptual genius of the show is that it leaves itself open to further worldbuilding. For those who haven’t seen Michael Crichton‘s original movie, Westworld is actually just one part of a bigger complex that includes Roman World and Medieval World, and it’s in the latter part that George R.R. Martin pitched an idea for a “Game Of Thrones” crossover.

Apparently, Martin had dinner with “Westworld” co-creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy before the show aired, and tossed around the idea that in Medieval World (if and when it appears in the series), should have robots and androids modelled after “Game Of Thrones” characters. Essentially, it would be not unlike going Universal Studios and hanging out in the Harry Potter section. It’s certainly meta, but the concept is almost too clever for its own good, and the pair explains why they’ll never go for it.

“He’s a lovely guy and a stunning writer and it’s flattering he would encourage a crossover. We should be so lucky,” Nolan told EW.

“I need to believe that dragons are real,” Joy said as her reason for not wanting to go down the “Game Of Thrones” crossover path. “I want them be a real thing. So as much as I love George, I can’t lose that for myself!”

It’s a very kindly and diplomatic answer, but clearly, the underlying thought is, “No way.” Still, for fans it’s a nice thing to imagine, though I’d guess for Nolan, Joy and the rest of the “Westworld” team, figuring out their own vision of Medieval World is probably a lot more fun.
