Joseph Kosinski Developing 'Blade Runner' Meets 'Battlestar Galactica' Sci-Fi Series 'Ballistic City' For AMC

nullSo, is AMC ready to go sci-fi? Well, it might be a smart play. The zombie genre has proven to be a massive success with the network, with “The Walking Dead” being a big hit, and it looks like they might want to see if sci-fi can do something similar.

Tron: Legacy” and “Oblivion” director Joseph Kosinski is teaming with “Pacific Rim” writer Travis Beacham for the pretty awesomely titled “Ballistic City.” The ambitious premise is set in a city contained within a spaceship that’s headed to an unknown world, following a former cop who falls into the criminal underworld, in something that’s described as a cross between “Blade Runner” and “Battlestar Galactica.” And that’s a mix we can get behind. Right now, the show is in development with both Kosinski and Beacham executive producing, with the former to direct while the latter writes.

Obviously, both are very well versed in sci-fi and know how to put on a spectacle and it will be interesting to see how they use the longer storytelling format cable allows to weave what sounds like a sprawling tale. Promising stuff, and at least some optimism that once “Breaking Bad” comes to an end later this year, AMC won’t be short of compelling projects to fill the gap. [Deadline]
