Well, it’s really all on this. You can tally up the box office receipts all you want for “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice” and “Suicide Squad,” but perception is just as valuable, if not more so, and right now, DC Films needs a movie that will succeed with both audiences and critics. Perhaps they’ll get it this summer with “Wonder Woman,” but it’s really “Justice League” that has to be an unequivocal home run. It features all of the core characters that will drive the movie universe going forward, and the film has to convince moviegoers they’ll want to stick with these superheroes for years down the road.
So, even though the movie is still eight months away, it’s not a big shock that Warner Bros. is embarking on a very long, probably quite expensive campaign and it starts with this new trailer. Zack Snyder assembles Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash, and Cyborg for their first onscreen outing together, in a movie that promises a few more doses of levity than ‘Dawn Of Justice,’ and a pullback on the bleakness of that film. DC Films nerds are already on board, but we’ll see if the public at large will go for it. But like I said, WB and DC are going to spend the rest of the year making sure everybody on the planet turns up on opening day.
“Justice League” arrives on November 17th.
