Kathleen Kennedy Says Han Solo 'Star Wars' Spinoff Will Have "Heist Or Western" Vibe

We know: It’s two movies away, and there’s plenty to dive into with “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and “Star Wars: Episode VIII” (this one doesn’t even have an official title yet!), so to talk about Phil Lord and Chris Miller‘s Han Solo spinoff this early feels a bit… silly. But it’s hard not to be a bit excited when those imaginative and inventive directors have already made some savvy casting choices, with Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover and Emilia Clarke all signed up for the movie. As for the tone the irreverent filmmakers behind “21 Jump Street” and “The Lego Movie” will bring, producer Kathleen Kennedy offers a small clue.

“This moves closer to a heist or Western type feel,” she told Variety. “We’ve talked about [Frederic] Remington, and those primary colors that are used in his paintings defining the look and feel of the film.”

Remington was a 19th century artist known for authentic looking paintings of the Old American West, so Kennedy seems to be suggesting we’re looking at a Han Solo film functioning as a space western, which is just fine by us. It’s pretty much a perfect genre fit for a movie about a young space smuggler. And we can only imagine that Lord and Miller will bring their unique sense of playfulness to the “Star Wars” universe.

There will lots more to find out and in the year and a half ahead to the film’s release on May 25, 2018.
