Chaos Reigns In 'The Killing Of A Sacred Deer' [Podcast]

Halloween is on the horizon, but can it possibly be as terrifying as the nightmare we already live in?

On this episode of Adjust Of Your Tracking, Joe and I get seriously creeped out by the new Yorgos Lanthimos film, “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” a surreal nightmare that plunges the audience into some of the darkest recesses of the cinematic mind, where impossible choices abound and unexpected jolts of pitch black humor don’t so much provide relief but instead push that queasy, unsettled feeling to its breaking point. I love this film, but you may very well hate it. And that’s okay!

We also discuss Lanthimos’ filmography and how he’s one of the most original, exciting directors working today. Interspersed between the director’s career and his latest film, we flit in and out of a broader discussion on the horror genre in general. In this age of modern terrors and a bummer news cycle seemingly set on hyperspeed and autopilot at the same time, how is this most lucrative and everlasting of genres reflecting our times? We stumble onto a few good theories, and hope that lessons are learned from those in power that greenlight movies will pay attention to what’s working and what’s getting responses — good or bad — from audiences.

Finally, I announce my next choice for our segment HOLD UP, in which we look back at a movie to see if it, in fact, holds up. On our next episode, we will discuss David O. Russell‘s 2004 misfire (or masterwork?), “I Heart Huckabees.” If you’d like to keep up give it a watch and tune in to our next show for our thoughts.
