Kit Harington Says He Initially Found Jon Snow's Return To 'Game Of Thrones' "Disappointing"

Now that “Game Of Thrones” season six has come and gone, it’s easy to forget that a year ago, websites were in a frenzy scrutinizing Kit Harington‘s every move —not to mention the length of his hair— trying to decipher if the rumors were true: that Jon Snow didn’t meet his end at the end of season five and would be returning to the hit HBO show. The actor played coy and no one involved with the show said anything, but the clues were laid out, and so the character was back this year. It must’ve been quite a ride for Harington, but he admits that at first he was a bit let down by what he saw on the page for Jon Snow.

“I knew I was coming back to life, but I didn’t know if I’d come back as a changed person, as a villain. So I couldn’t pre-plan anything, which was hard,” he told The Wrap. “And then I got the scripts, and actually he comes back as himself, as the Jon that everyone knows. Which at first I found disappointing. But it’s more subtle than that. He has an insight into what lies beyond that very few people in his world do, and that no one in our world does —he knows that there’s no afterlife. Which does quietly drive who he is and what he wants to do.”

So it sounds like Harington really wanted some purpose for the return of Jon Snow, and it looks like he eventually found it. As for the future, and the truth behind Snow’s family history —that his mother is possibly Lyanna Stark, and his father is Rhaegar Targaryen— Harington is staying quiet for now.

“If I say what my theory is, then some people will take it as gospel because I play the character,” he said. “And I also find it unhelpful in playing the character to theorize about it, because he doesn’t think too much about it. If he gets to know that truth at some point, which I hope he will, it will be a really fascinating moment to play.”

Production on season seven is gearing up, and “Game Of Thrones” will return to HBO next summer.
