Kristen Stewart Dives 'Underwater'

Ever since she wrapped up her work with the “Twilight” franchise, Kristen Stewart has gone pretty hard on arthouse and auteur fare, adding Olivier Assayas, Woody Allen, Drake Doremus, and Ang Lee to her Rolodex (that’s the old timey word for the contact list on your iPhone, kids). But she hasn’t entirely stepped away from blockbusters. There was “Snow White And The Huntsman” at Universal, and while she bowed out of the sequel, Stewart is heading over to 20th Century Fox for another movie that will bring her back to the multiplex.

THR reports that the actress is in negotiations to star in “Underwater.” Will Eubank (“The Signal“) will write and direct the picture that follows a crew of science types on an underground mission, who have to fight for their survival following an earthquake. Stewart would play the jaded lead character, and even based on the loose premise, I’m getting a James Cameron throwback vibe mixed with a bit of disaster movie flavor (indeed, the movie has been compared to “Armageddon“). But we’ll have to see how it turns out.

Everything is moving fast, with cameras set to roll next month in New Orleans, so probably a good idea to mark your calendars for a 2018 release.
