There are plenty of writers, filmmakers or actors who, while their work is electric on screen, can be a little dull in conversation, or react curiously to the format of long-form conversation in that way. But then there are certain people who are boon to any podcast they might appear on, and Judd Apatow is one of them.

Over the years, the comedy titan’s popped up on most of the biggest talk-show-style podcasts, from WTF and You Made It Weird to Brian Koppelman’s The Moment and Bill Simmons, and he’s always been an engaging, honest and funny listen. Late last week, Apatow popped up for a second time on the Nerdist podcast, and it’s one of his best appearances to date.

The writer/director/producer doesn’t appear to have had anything in particular to plug, with his latest show “Love” having hit Netflix a while back, and the Apatow-produced “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping” not hitting until June, but that just makes the talk between Apatow and the Nerdist crew all the more enjoyable.

Recorded in the wake of the tragic passing of Apatow’s friend and mentor Garry Shandling, it’s a touching 90 minutes or so, but one full of insights on film, TV, stand-up (which Apatow has returned to of late) and all kinds of things. Have a listen below for the full thing.
