Live Action Pokémon Pikachu Film Fast-Tracked For 2017 Production Start

2016’s Pet Rock, aka “Pokémon Go,” is a thing I will never quite understand. Clearly, I’m in in the minority, with legions of people trespassing onto property and putting themselves into danger to gather points in the augmented reality mobile game. And so of course, Hollywood isn’t far behind with a movie — yep, those rumors were true.

Legendary Entertainment and The Pokémon Company have announced they’re fast-tracking a live action film for a 2017 production based on the Japanese video game “Detective Pikachu.” The movie will bring to life one of the most popular Pokémon characters, though further details of how his story will be told are being kept under wraps for the moment, and I can only imagine that’s because they have no idea yet what it is. But I’m sure some screenwriter is inking a deal right now to put pen to paper and figure it out.

It’s a bit of a risk considering that by this time in 2017, we’ll hopefully be remembering what a wacky time it was when everyone was playing “Pokémo Go” and Donald Trump was running for President. But Legendary seem to have enough faith that the brand will sustain and they’ll be catching a wave.

No word yet on a writer or director, but before you laugh at this idea, just remember that at first glance, everyone thought “The Lego Movie” was a stupid concept too. Check out the trailer for the video game below.
