Luca Guadagnino Enlists Julianne Moore, Mia Goth, KiKi Layne, & More For New Short Film

Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Luca Guadagnino hasn’t fully announced his next feature-length project, following 2018’s “Suspiria” remake, but we do know what project he’s tackling next. According to Variety, the filmmaker is teaming with an all-star cast for a new short film in collaboration with Pierpaolo Piccioli, creative director of the Valentino fashion house.

Now, when you hear that a director is teaming with a company for a short film, you might immediately think that this is going to be a little commercial. We’ve seen it happen time and time again, with high-profile directors releasing little 5-minute commercials highlighting a fragrance or fashion line. But what Guadagnino and Valentino have up their sleeves is very different. The filmmaker has assembled a cast that includes Julianne Moore, Kyle MacLachlan, Marthe Keller, KiKi Layne, Mia Goth, and Alba Rohrwacher for a new 35-minute short film featuring some of Valentino’s newest works.

The untitled project is directed by Guadagnino and has the aforementioned all-star cast. The short is written by “Vinyl” writer Michael Mitnik and will feature a score from Oscar winner Ryuichi Sakamoto. The story is said to follow an Italian-American writer, played by Moore, as she goes to Rome to retrieve her aging mother. The film will feature multiple timelines, each with a new actress portraying the mother, including Goth and Keller. Layne will appear as “the spark that triggers the stream of consciousness in Francesca” according to Guadagnino.

“The ambition is to play in an important film festival,” said the director.

The filmmaker also mentioned two previously famous projects that paired a director with a fashion designer, including Luis Buñuel’s 1967 film “Belle de Jour” and Takeshi Kitano’sDolls.” However, what separates Guadagnino’s collaboration with Valentino is that the film is going to be inspired by the line of clothing, instead of the designs being inspired by the film.

There’s no scheduled release date for the short film, as of yet.
