Mahershala Ali To Star In Marvel Studios' New 'Blade' Film

Silly me. Last week, I thought the entire lineup of Phase 4 Marvel Cinematic Universe films was obvious. “Black Widow,” “The Eternals,” “Shang-Chi” and “Doctor Strange 2” were pretty much givens. Then came the news that “Thor 4” (aka “Thor: Love and Thunder”) was happening. That was completely out of left-field. But I had no fucking clue that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige had a true bombshell to drop. And that bombshell is called “Blade” and stars Oscar-winning actor Mahershala Ali.

If you asked me 12 hours ago if I needed a new “Blade” film in my life, I would have easily said, “absolutely not!” But here I am, mere hours later, wanting nothing more than to see Ali kicking the shit out of vampires in a black leather coat. Now, please.

Sadly, unlike the rest of the Phase 4 lineup, “Blade” doesn’t have an official release date. However, judging by the fact that everything else is 2020 or 2021, odds are “Blade” is looking at a 2022 release, at the earliest. Damn, the next 2+ years waiting for this is going to be torture.

There’s really nothing much else to say about it. Marvel Studios has clearly gone away from the need to hire relative unknowns to star in these superhero films. Now, the studio is going after Oscar winners and A-listers to carry the load in the wake of Robert Downey, Jr and Chris Evans departing the MCU.

And no offense to Wesley Snipes, who really did kick off the modern superhero film renaissance with his “Blade” trilogy in the late-’90s, Mahershala Ali is a big upgrade for the franchise. And who the hell knows which incredible talent Marvel will snatch up to direct the film.
