Marc Webb Talks Plans For Abandoned 'The Amazing Spider-Man 3'

With this summer’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming” an unqualified success, and with plans for a new trilogy and spinoff franchise, Sony is well on the way to making “The Amazing Spider-Man” a distant memory. Before they teamed up with Marvel, the studio tried a Spidey reboot on their own, but the results left much to be desired, and eventually the whole thing was scrapped. It meant that Marc Webb never got to finish the trio of movies he set out to make, but now he’s sharing the path they would’ve taken.

“They were going to make a ‘Sinister Six‘ movie before we did the third [Spider-Man movie],” he told Den Of Geek. “Chris Cooper was going to come back and play the Goblin. We were going to freeze his head, and then he was going to be brought back to life. And then there was that character called The Gentleman. We had some notions about how to do it, but I think maybe we were thinking too far ahead when we started building in those things. But it was a fun exercise. I look back very fondly on those days.”

In case you’re wondering, The Gentleman is a villain that has never been on the big screen before. The interesting thing about him is that, like Batman, he doesn’t have any natural superpowers, but is incredibly smart and wealthy, which gives him access to pretty much anything he needs. That would’ve certainly been a fascinating path to pursue for a Spidey adversary. There were even more plans that never got realized.

“[Norman Osborn] was going to be the main villain,” Webb added. “He was going to come out and lead the Sinister Six. We had talked about Vulture a little bit too, actually.”

Vulture, who finally features in ‘Homecoming,’ has long been a character directors have tried to tackle. Sam Raimi wanted him for his aborted “Spider-Man 4” as well, but Marvel and Sony finally cracked the baddie this summer.

All intriguing stuff, and it’ll be interesting to see how time treats Webb’s films. Thoughts? Let us know in the comments section.
