4 Clips From 'Spider-Man: Homecoming'

If studios insist on dropping clips from their films prior to theatrical release — spoilers be damned — they could do worse than Marvel has with this new crop of reveals from the upcoming “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”

One of the most anticipated movies of the year, ‘Spider-Man’ is now less than two weeks away. If early reviews are any indicator, it’ll also be one of this summer’s biggest box office hits (shocker). And while Marvel isn’t exactly withholding ‘Spider-Man’ footage, by the looks of things they aren’t eager to give too much away before the film arrives on July 7th. (Granted, they could be doing a better job in that regard.)

In the least interesting of today’s four new “Spider-Man” clips, villain Michael Keaton (as The Vulture) says some ominous things to a henchman (played by “Orange is the New Black” star Michael Chernus). Fair to say this clip does not inspire much hope of “Spider-Man: Homecoming” breaking Marvel’s streak of less-than-inspired villains.

A second clip has Peter Parker (Tom Holland) bantering lightly with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) over dinner at a diner. Not much to see here.

On a significantly more upbeat note, this clip has Martin Starr in it!

And last but very much not least, here we have a charming clip (the most spoilery of the four) wherein Peter’s secret identity is outed in an unexpected way:

When all’s said and done, there’s reason to believe that “Spider-Man: Homecoming” will be one of Marvel’s best films in years. Holland’s already proven himself a fantastic Spider-Man in “Captain America: Civil War,” and director Jon Watts has my trust after his remarkable 2015 indie, “Cop Car.” Unlike some other studios, Marvel has confidence enough in this film not to give us any of its best moments in the weeks leading up to its release. Those last two clips, in particular, should set us all at ease that Watts’s John-Hughes-inspired take on “Spider-Man” will live up to the hype.

And for the bonus round, here’s the full, star-studded New York press conference for the movie and the very busy new IMAX poster.
