Michael Shannon Joins Guillermo Del Toro's Supernatural Romance

If you put Michael Shannon in a movie, the odds that I’ll watch it increase by about 75-80%. But, all due respect to Shannon, I’m already intrigued by Guillermo del Toro‘s upcoming movie. I’ve never been a big fan of the director in blockbuster mode, but I really enjoyed his overcooked, superbly heightened take on Bronte with “Crimson Peak.” And when the filmmaker is working on smaller canvases it seems to force his imagination to think outside the box, which is why his upcoming supernatural romance could be something special.

Already set to star Octavia Spencer, Sally Hawkins, and Michael Stuhlbarg, Michael Shannon has now joined the film, taking the villain role. While more detailed plot points are floating around the internet, the official logline for this one is that it’s an other-worldly love story, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1963, that features a mysterious and magical journey. All I know is Spencer, Hawkins and Shannon are going to be participating, and my ticket is pretty much sold already.

Production kicks off this summer, with more casting to come. [THR]
