'All The Money In The World' Reshoots To Cost All The Money

Ridley Scott’s decision that he was going to reshoot Kevin Spacey’s scenes in “All The Money In The World” with Christopher Plummer, and still make the awards season release date next month, sent shock waves through the industry. While the director was applauded for replacing the disgraced actor in his movie, it’s all going to come with a very hefty pricetag.

Variety reports that financiers Imperative Entertainment will be spending upwards of $10 million for the eight to ten days of new shooting. So, where is that cash going? Well, it’s obviously covering the pro-rated weekly fees of Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Williams who will need to return to shoot their scenes with Plummer, along with all the logistics required behind that. It should be noted, the decision has been made to forgo trying to digitally place Plummer in Spacey’s scenes by having him shoot in front of green screen — it’s actually easier to recreate the sets and get the actors back, and simply redo the sequences.

However, more cash will be needed for post-production and new marketing materials such as trailers, posters, and in-theater standees. Not to mention, all of this is being done on a huge time crunch with “All The Money In The World” slated to open in just over one month. Scott is known for working ridiculously fast, but even this is going to require some superhero style moving of mountains to get across the finish the line. The plan is to shoot and have the movie locked by December 15th — exactly one week before it opens — which means critics groups that vote in late November and early December will not have seen the picture.

But there’s more at stake beyond the commercial and Oscar prospects, as “All The Money In The World” is also looking to beat Danny Boyle’s FX series “Trust” — about the exact same story — which is due to arrive in January.

“All The Money In The World” opens on December 22nd.
