'Mortal Kombat' Reboot Closer To Being Unleashed With New Director Attached

For at least a good half decade or so, Hollywood has been trying to crack a reboot of “Mortal Kombat.” For a while, Kevin Tancharoen (“Fame,” “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie”) was attached to the gig after creating his own promo trailer for what his vision would look like. Commercials director Simon McQuoid now has the martial arts movie on his plate for his feature directorial debut. You might not know his name, but you’ve probably seen his work for Samsung, Playstation, Nissan and many more, and most recently, his Duracell spot for “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” got a lot of attention. And as they say, there’s no such thing as coincidences, and I can only surmise that helped get him a meeting on “Mortal Kombat.”

James Wan is producing the project, and it has a script by up-and-comer Greg Russo, but we’ll see how soon it gets to the big screen, as those involved have been pretty patient so far. For now, check out McQuoid’s Duracell ad below. [Variety]
