New 'Labyrinth' Movie & 'Joe Dirt' Sequel In The Works

Today, we’ve got news about two movies that may be wildly different, but whose followup prospects always seemed like longshots (and involve major characters with ridiculous ’80s-ish hair). Until now…

It’s been almost three decades since the unlikely combination of Jim Henson and David Bowie gave the world “Labyrinth.” While it was a box office flop back in 1986, the musical fantasy became a cult favorite since. And while sequel talks have bounced around for years (a working title of “Curse Of The Goblin King” was once bandied about), it seems the Henson organization are still eager to revisit that movie universe.

Buried in a recent news item from Variety is word that a new “Labyrinth” movie is in the works, but that it’s not a sequel. Spinoff? Reboot? Reset? Your guess is as good as ours. And that effort is on a slate that includes a “Fraggle Rock” movie (about which we haven’t heard anything in two years) and a sequel to “The Dark Crystal” (whose development went on hiatus a while back as well). So manage those expectations.

Meanwhile, if you’re one of the five people clamoring for a sequel to David Spade‘s 2001 comedy “Joe Dirt,” today is your lucky day. Deadline reveals that online outlet Crackle will host the digital sequel, “Joe Dirt 2.” Spade is co-writing the movie with Fred Wolf, who will also direct. Production will begin in November. Hooray.
