New Trailer Brings Studio Ghibli's 'Ronja, The Robber’s Daughter' To Amazon Prime

What to me looks like an animated “Romeo & Juliet” (replacing the romance, of course, with friendship)-like story about the son and daughter of feuding families who become friends despite the odds seems a bit too traditional for the awesome Studio Ghibli. While the 26-part show originally premiered in Japan in 2014 to split reviews, “Ronja, The Robber’s Daughter” is finally making its way to the U.S. courtesy of Amazon Prime, where perhaps it’ll have a better reception.

Adapted from the children’s novel by Astrid Lindgren, presented by Studio Ghibli and directed by Hayao Miyazaki’s son Gorô Miyazaki, the series does seem rather ordinary on the surface, but there are flickers of the more fantastical fare the studio is known for. Here’s the synopsis:

The daughter of a professional robber, Ronja realizes the complicated nature of her father’s profession when she befriends Birk, the child of a rival tribe. She struggles to balance this friendship with her family relationship but comes to understand, how differences can be overcome with the help of love and understanding.

“Ronja, The Robber’s Daughter” premieres January 27th on Amazon Prime. [AV Club]
