The Next Generation Gets On The Track In New Trailer For 'Cars 3'

For a long time, the “Cars” franchise was deemed as Pixar’s lesser catalogue entry, but one that has been a cash cow, reaping in millions and millions dollars thanks to licensed product sales. And so, that there’s a “Cars 3” is a no brainer. But not only is looking like the series has grown up a bit (check out the gritty first teaser), director Brian Fee calls it “the most human” film in the franchise yet.

“[Lightning] McQueen is not the young hotshot anymore, the kid he was back then in ‘Cars 1,’ ” he explained to EW. “He’s in the middle of his life, and as an athlete, that’s getting up there. You have your whole life ahead of you, yet your career is starting to show its age. He’s looking in the mirror and realizing, ‘I’m 40 years old,’ and dealing with the fact that the thing that you love more than anything else, you might not be able to do forever.”

So, just to get that right, this is animated movie about cars for kids, that’s about a midlife crisis. That’s certainly ambitious….

Featuring the voices of Owen Wilson, Cristela Alonzo, and Armie Hammer, “Cars 3” opens on June 16th.
