'The Nice Guys' Getting Female-Led TV Reboot

Last summer, there were two terrific, big screen comedies that everybody slept on: “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping” and “The Nice Guys.” It’s a small crime that audiences largely shunned the films, and if you haven’t watched them yet, you’re only hurting yourself. At any rate, we didn’t think anybody had remembered the movies, but it turns out that that at least one of them is being eyed for a small screen reboot.

Fox has decided to give “The Nice Guys” a new life as a female-led comedy series. Michael Diliberti (“30 Minutes or Less“) will pen the pilot, about which plot details are being kept under wraps, but it will jump from the film’s 1970s setting to the present day, with women taking the lead roles. I would assume the show won’t be borrowing any elements from the movie, given that Shane Black isn’t involved, and I’d wager we’ll follow mismatched female partners as they work on various cases.

While we have zero problems with a female-led genre comedy series, it kind of sounds like they’re taking “The Nice Guys” and making it as uninteresting as possible. The show really just sounds like a buddy comedy, rather than a riff on detective novels, set against the wild backdrop of ’70s Los Angeles. But hey, we’ll see where this goes, and if it turns out great, we’ll be the first to tune in. [THR]
