Nicolas Winding Refn Says He Wants To Direct A 'Batgirl' Movie, Watch A 30-Min Interview With The 'Neon Demon' Director

Despite having flirted with the idea several times — a “Logan’s Run” remake, a Harrison Ford movie, “The Equalizer” — Nicolas Winding Refn has yet to make a proper Hollywood studio movie. “Drive” came closest, though was still an independent film, and he returned to L.A. for this past weekend’s “The Neon Demon” (which just opened wide to semi-disastrous effects), but a true mainstream breakthrough is yet to come for the provocative Dane.

Despite having mostly an arthouse following, Refn remains keen: in an interview with Business Insider this week, he said “I would love to make one of those big Hollywood films that costs a lot of money and and has a lot of people running around with cell phones and all that insanity.” And that could potentially include a superhero.

Years back, Refn expressed very public interest in directing a “Wonder Woman” movie, a job that would eventually go to “Monster” director Patty Jenkins. But if Refn were to tackle the genre, he says there’s a different female hero he’d like to do. “You know the one I want to do? I want to make Batgirl. Let’s get Warner working on it.”

Let’s be honest here: Refn has a tendency to say things like this, things that don’t necessarily have any relation to reality. Refn was a long shot for “Wonder Woman,” and is a longer shot for any “Batgirl” movie, particularly because, as he says in the same interview, “I very much enjoy my freedom creatively.” And with “Neon Demon” not doing so hot at the box office, Refn probably isn’t at the top of WB’s list, as fun as it might be.

Still, it’s a nice thought. For more Refn, you can take a look below at David Poland’s 30 minute interview with the director, and check out “The Neon Demon’ in theaters — it’s really pretty good, on the whole.
