Octavia Spencer Teaches Sam Worthington To Feel Again In Trailer For 'The Shack'

There’s no way around it. The new trailer for “The Shack” is strange. From the incredibly dark opening and the very odd acting choices by star Sam Worthington (remember him?) to the almost cartoon-like last half, the trailer is all over the place. One thing is for sure, “The Shack” is targeting your heart strings and expects you to bring tissues.

“The Shack” is the film adaptation of the best-selling faith based novel of the same name. It tells the story of Mackenzie, a father of five, who’s youngest daughter goes missing during a family vacation. Believing she was brutally murdered in a shack in the woods, he spirals into depression. That is, until a mysterious letter arrives in the mail from God. Yep, God sends him a letter asking him to go on vacation for the weekend to the same shack to help deal with his pain.

The trailer pretty much gives you all those beats, but in the space of 2 ½ minutes, so the tone is all over the place. One minute, you’re experiencing the death of a child, and the next minute, trees are magically growing and Sam Worthington is frolicking in (and walking on) water. Adding to the weirdness is Worthington doing his best Clint Eastwood impression, with a low, monotone, almost threatening voice. But hey, Octavia Spencer looks to be giving it her all!

“The Shack” is directed by Stuart Hazeldine and adapted by John Fusco, Andrew Lanham, and Destin Cretton. Along with Worthington and Spencer, the film stars Radha Mitchell, Alice Braga, and none other than Tim McGraw, who also sings the theme song.

“The Shack” hits theaters March 3rd.
