It's Official: 'Star Trek 4' Is Happening, And Captain Kirk Will Meet His Dead Dad Somehow

The cat was let out of the bag last week by J.J. Abrams, when he spilled that the script for “Star Trek 4” was finished, and even more curiously, would feature Chris Hemsworth‘s Dad Kirk alongside Chris Pine‘s Captain Kirk. Of course, Kirk’s Dad dying was part of the reason he signed up for Starfleet anyway (at least in this new Kelvin timeline), but it looks like Hemsworth’s return will be more than mere flashback.

Paramount Pictures today has not only formally announced “Star Trek 4,” but revealed that it will find Captain Kirk crossing “paths with a man he never had a chance to meet, but whose legacy has haunted him since the day he was born: his father.” Warp speed to WTF. So, time travel? Not sure how this is going to work, but I really hope this whole movie isn’t the crew meeting up with their dead relatives. At any rate, “Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home” played with time travel, and I’ll let you weigh in on the merits of that one in the comments section.

No word yet on a director, or release cast, but the rest of the regular cast are expected to return as well, with J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay writing the script. “Star Trek Beyond” opens on Friday.
