Last summer, the blockbuster movie cause celebre among a certain audience was "Edge Of Tomorrow." The film barely crossed $100 million domestically — not great numbers for a tentpole summer movie — and there were many complaints about the marketing of the film, and even the title. Some felt that Warner Bros. didn’t do a good job in handling the movie even months after it was released, with co-star Emily Blunt particularly vocal recently.
"I loved ‘All You Need Is Kill,’ personally. I thought it was more ironic and totally more than a movie, you know?" she told Collider about the original title of the film. The actress further elaborated with ScreenCrush, saying, "I wish they’d shown more of the humor and the relationship in the marketing. And I love Warner Bros., I do love them, but I think the movie seemed to be, from everyone’s reaction, ‘Oh my God, it’s not what I thought it would be.’ So, something must have gone awry there."
But Blunt didn’t stop there, and called out her co-star for praise too. "But, I think Tom is amazing in it as well. He’s so funny. I think it’s one of the best things he’s done," she says. And Blunt is not alone in that assessment.
Chatting with Dazed, Paul Thomas Anderson had some big words about his "Magnolia" star Tom Cruise and Doug Liman‘s sci-film. "Did you see ‘Edge Of Tomorrow’? It’s fucking great. And no one went to see that movie," Anderson exclaimed. "That was Cruise at his best. You watch Tom Cruise, and you say ‘There’s no one else that can do that.’ There’s not a moment when you say, ‘I could see someone else playing that part.’ It never occurs to you. There’s only one man that can do this, and it’s Tom Cruise."
And it’s not the only 2014 movie that impressed the "Inherent Vice" director. The other Anderson also delivered a movie that knocked out Paul. "I thought that ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel‘ was about nostalgia in such a beautiful way. No matter what anyone has to say about Wes Anderson, you can’t fault that movie," he said. "Looking back at another time when manners and good hotel service was standard, fucking standard. The fact they take him out and kill him at the end… That movie is so fucking good.”
