'Poor Things': Ramy Youssef To Star Opposite Emma Stone In Yorgos Lanthimos' Next Film

Yorgos Lanthimos is not a filmmaker that goes for the most obvious things. His films are always unique in their dialogue, story, and casting. And it appears he’s keeping that trend going with his upcoming feature, “Poor Things.”

According to Deadline, Ramy Youssef has been added to the cast of Yorgos Lanthimos’ upcoming film, “Poor Things.” While the exact role has yet to be revealed, Youssef is expected to join a cast that already includes Emma Stone and Willem Dafoe. “Poor Things” tells the Victorian story of a young woman, Belle Baxter, that is brought back to life by a brilliant, eccentric scientist. Yes, it does sound as if Lanthimos is giving us his version of the “Frankenstein” story, which would be pretty incredible.

To say Youssef’s casting is unexpected is an understatement. In contrast to Dafoe, who is a legendary actor that has done it all, and Stone, who has proven herself with Lanthimos in “The Favourite,” Youssef is a stand-up comedian that is best known for his dramedy series, “Ramy,” on Hulu inspired by his own life. In addition, he’s appeared in projects such as “Mr. Robot” and the film “Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far On Foot.” Putting him in a Victorian-era satire just doesn’t immediately make a whole lot of sense. That said, Youssef is a very talented performer and we’re interested in seeing what he might be able to bring to the very unique style that Lanthimos has shown in previous films.

“Poor Things” is set to be written by Tony McNamara, who previously worked with Lanthimos on the aforementioned, Oscar-winning feature, “The Favourite.” The film is based on the novel of the same name from author Alasdair Grey. It’s unclear when production will get underway.
