Razzie Awards: ‘Fantastic Four’ & ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ Sweep & Tie For Worst Picture

Fifty Shades Of Grey

It wouldn’t be an Oscar-eve without the release of the Razzie Awards (which happened last night). While the Academy Awards obviously celebrate the (supposedly) best and brightest of the movie industry, the Razzies, its scrappy antidote, of course, examines the worst performances and films of the year. The Razzies take some wild swings on occasion, but, arguably, they got it “right” this year, at least in their zeroing in at the tuneless and chemistry-free S&M relationship adaptation of “Fifty Shades Of Grey.” The E.L. James movie, along with 20th Century Fox’s “Fantastic Four,” swept the awards, managing to tie for Worst Picture. The superhero movie was awarded Worst Director (poor Josh Trank, who has been through enough this year), Worst Remake, Rip-Off Or Sequel, and the aforementioned Worst Picture.

“Fifty Shades Of Grey,” on the other hand, was trashed in several other areas, including Worst Actor and Actress, Worst Combo, and Worst Screenplay; it feels like a damning statement on the film. Elsewhere, Eddie Redmayne’s ridiculously overwrought performance in “Jupiter Ascending” was razzed (he joins that Sandra Bullock, Halle Berry, and other Oscar winners who also have a Razzie) and Sylvester Stallone, somewhat of a target of the Razzie institution over the years, won a Redeemer award for his soulful “Creed” turn.
