Relativity Still Wants To Make 'Immortals 2'

I don’t claim to fully understanding how money works in Hollywood, and studio accounting is pretty much akin to a magic trick as far as I know. But all that said, it baffles me that Relativity Media not only manages to stick around, but get people to invest money in them, particularly after a string of flops, including most recently, Singapore’s social media company YuuZoo, who have given them $50 million for a 33.3% stake in the company. And now, they’ve managed to convince Storyoscopic Films to team up with them to finance a whole slate of movies, most of which are sequels.

Screen Daily reveals that plans including making followups to a whole bunch of movies you never cared about, with “November Man 2,” “Act Of Valor 2,” and “Earth To Echo 2,” plus a handful of family movies. But the one idea that sorta makes sense is “Immortals 2.” The original is still Relativity’s most successful movie to date, earning $226 million worldwide, and to be fair, studio honcho Ryan Kavanaugh does have a plan to give the sequel some global appeal.

“We are early on… the script is almost ready, and Henry Cavill is the star,” he said at the Frames conference in 2015 in India, where the country’s B4U Networks is remaking a handful of Relativity movies (via THR). “We would like to explore the idea of shooting an entire movie in India that can end up grossing $300 million-400 million worldwide. We are also thinking about casting one of the lead roles with an Indian actor. The two industries [India and the U.S.] can be unified to create something special.”

Okay, it’s not the worst idea in the world, but then again, it’s likely safe to say that no one is particularly hankering for another “Immortals.” And who knows if this will even happen, given that every few weeks, brings some kind of rocky change at Relativity. But perhaps, somewhere in our cinematic future, is another movie with Henry Cavill yelling in slow-motion.
