‘Right Before Aaron’ Trailer: Justin Long & Cobie Smulders

For quite some time Justin Long has been the face of the middling romantic comedy genre. The actor has led a string of relatively low-profile films about down on their luck dudes pining for lost loves and manic pixie dream girls (“Going The Distance,” “A Case Of You,” “Comet”). But while Long-fronted pictures haven’t always fared well (“Comet” was at least interesting), he has mostly managed to remain a welcome, if quantifiable presence, thus giving us reason to remain hopeful for his upcoming dramedy “Literally, Right Before Aaron,” which pairs him with the delightful Cobie Smulders. Now the first trailer is here to give us a glimpse of the festivities. Here’s the official synopsis:

Still reeling from his breakup, Adam (Justin Long) is devastated when he learns that his ex (Cobie Smulders) is engaged. What’s worse is he’s invited to the wedding. When Adam returns home for the festivities, he must confront his unresolved feelings and an uncertain future in hopes of convincing himself and everyone else that he is truly happy for her. There he discovers the comedy in romance, the tragedy of letting go and the hard truth about growing up.

Rounded out by a solid supporting cast — Kristen Schaal, John Cho, Peter Gallagher and Charlotte McKinney — the most unknown quantity of “Literally, Right Before Aaron” is debut writer/director Ryan Eggold, who is best known for playing Tom Keen on “The Blacklist” and who based the script on a real life experience. Eggold aside, ‘Literally’ had a noticeably quiet run at Tribeca earlier this year where it didn’t turn many heads or garner much positive word of mouth.
