It’s been over three years since Leos Carax unveiled his Denis Lavant powered “Holy Motors,” and not much has been heard from the director since. Earlier this year, theatrical quirk-pop pranksters Sparks revealed they were working on a musical project with Carax, and it appears the pieces are starting to be pulled together.
French magazine Les Inrockuptibles (via The Film Stage) reports that Rooney Mara and Adam Driver are circling the project which will be lensed by cinematographer Caroline Champetier (“Holy Motors,” “Of Gods And Men“). The musical comedy must secure financing for the 10 to 12 million Euro budget, so we’ll see if this pans out. Moreover, there aren’t any plot details yet, though trying to divine plot details for a Carax film doesn’t seem wise. But as you might expect, this won’t be a traditional song-and-dance effort.

“These won’t be done in a Broadway, razzmatazz kind of way,” Sparks member Russell Mael said back in February, who is also working on a musical with Guy Maddin. “They’re both all music, where sometimes the story is being progressed through dialogue that’s done in a hyper-stylized, sung/spoken way. They’re both pretty uncompromising, but at the same time we think they’re really accessible.”
Certainly, two rising actors might help get the final bit of cash the movie needs to get made, so here’s hoping. And should it all work out, this might be Carax’s biggest movie yet.
