Rumor: Possible Avenger Cameo In 'Doctor Strange,' Plus New Photos Reveal Magic And Mystery

2016 has been rather hit or miss for superhero films. While “Captain America: Civil War and “Deadpool have been bank-breaking critical and commercial hits, every other superhero film this year has disappointed. However, all signs indicate “Doctor Strange will end the superhero genre on a good note this year, with a new rumor adding fuel to the fire.

MCUExchange reports Robert Downey Jr. may cameo as Tony Stark in “Doctor Strange” to help establish “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” While this report is unsubstantiated, a possible Tony Stark cameo wouldn’t be implausible. Downey Jr. is beloved by audiences and his presence in “Doctor Strange” wouldn’t be out of the blue, as the film will be partially set in New York City, the Avengers’ former home base. An update on the Twitter account of “Doctor Strange” co-star Benedict Wong suggests to having wrapped additional scenes for the film, despite having officially wrapped in April. Thus the possibility of a Tony Stark cameo, via reshoots or post-credit teaser, could still be in the cards; if this rumor pans out, Marvel synergy strikes again.

Meanwhile, Marvel has released some new “Doctor Strange” official photos. We see Benedict Cumberbatch as the good doctor, as well as close-ups of co-stars Chiwetel Eijofor, Benedict Wong and Mads Mikkelsen, but the real money shots are in the magic. Strange’s seals and crystalized magic provide a window into how magic is manifested and utilized in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Strange appears to be using his seal in conjunction with the Eye of Agamotto as a study aid; they certainly look cool, along with the close-ups of New York Inception-ized threefold. By embracing the trippy, mystical and magical, Marvel could once again expand the boundaries of superhero films.

“Doctor Strange” arrives in theaters November 4th.
