Scott Derrickson Explains How He Wants The 'Doctor Strange' Sequel To Be Like 'The Dark Knight'

These days, talking about sequels before an antecedent movie is even released is par for the course, and especially in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where every actor is signed for multiple movies, having those discussions as early as possible makes sense. So as the first reviews have rolled out for “Doctor Strange” (here’s ours), the discussion of what’s next for the character played by Benedict Cumberbatch is already being tossed around. According to director Scott Derrickson, the followup will be all about raising the stakes with the villains our hero has to face. And he’s taking some inspiration from Christopher Nolan.

“What made ‘The Dark Knight‘ so great was that the origin story of Batman had been well told, and then it was time to bring in a villain where you really got to go deep. And not just the Joker, but also Two-Face. It was a more visceral experience; I’d love to be able to do that for Doctor Strange,” he told Den Of Geek.

As many have already noted, “Doctor Strange” lifts its visual style for the action scenes quite liberally from “Inception,” and it would seem Derrickson is quite a fan of Nolan’s general approach to storytelling. But whether we’ll see further adventures of the good doctor depends on the film’s box office performance.

“Doctor Strange” opens on November 4th.
