I hadn't heard much (and by that, I mean any) of Kevine Devine's solo stuff, even though I thought The Miracle of '86 was decent. I found the majority of his material to be boring as decaying shit, even though there were a few parts o fhis performance that made my head turn in interest. Most of his songs had me wallowing in my own lack of entertainment. The coolest part about his set was that he had a girl onstage who did nothing but backup vocals and a bit of tamborine.
There was an older crowd at this show, which made sense since it was taking place at a University (Salve Regina), but still very unexpected. The crowd was also smaller than anticipated, even though there were (probably) well over 500 people in attendence (keep in mind, I suck at estimating). I found it funny that the stage was almost as long as the floor (though not as wide), and I was a big fan of the seat the bleachers provided me.
Another unexpected moment came with the lack of crowd reaction that Brand New had. People were screaming in excitement, but not as much as I had thought. There were even times when individual conversations could easily be heard between songs. Besides that, they played a really great set; one that lasted just over an hour. They were really tight and it was a lot of fun hearing their songs live again.
Brand New played one new song that was very good, although formulaic. It started off quiet, got louder, went quiet, got louder, etc. (a bridge was in there as well). The chorus was awesome, but I can see this song getting boring after a few listens, although it did peak my interest for their upcoming album.
The best part of their set involved no music at all. They had finished playing "Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don't," exiting the stage while the crowd waited for their encore, chanting for "Jude Law and a Semester Abroad." After a few minutes, the lights came back on and everybody left, a little disappointed. I thought that it was awesome that they totally fucked with the crowd like that. Stuff like that makes me laugh for some reason.
