The Sword, Torche, Seemless, ASG, Tarantula A.D.
The Living Room in Providence, RI
April 8, 2006

After my original plans for the night fell threw, I remembered that this show was going on and decided that going to this show (which I had actually forgotten about due to other plans) would be much more fun than sitting at home in anger. After the first song of Tarantula A.D., I knew I was right and found myself in an awesome mood.

Tarantula A.D. are fucking insane. They had a guy playing cello, another on drums, a third on gong (although he only played the first song) and another member playing a one part bass one part guitar contraption (a literal Bass guitar). They also had some electronics and a bin full of percussion toys that they made full use of, a piano and a small harmonica like piano that the cellist blew into (someone later told me what it was, but I forgot). To top that off, the bassist of The Sword joined them on a couple of tracks.

They played mostly in depth instrumental music that was mindblowing and close to indescribable, but they also had a couple tracks with vocals that reminded me of an artsy Pink Floyd. To say that Tarantula A.D. were incredible would be an understatement, even though they played 15 minutes longer than all of the other bands.

I wasn't a fan of ASG's album, and actually pondered showing up late to miss them (though I would have missed out on Tarantula A.D.), but I saw them and learned that their live set wasn't much better. They had somre good hard rock riffs, but their set was boring overall.

I'm pretty shocked that Seemless isn't huge on rock radio. They're so much better than the so called hard rock bands tearing up the charts that those other bands should be bowing down and kissing some ass. Its hard to listen to these guys and not band your head to the beat or get those huge riffs they play stuck in your head; even harder to not see that these guys are destined to be rock stars. They have the talent, and a great live show to back it up.

Torche was really fucking good. I was sitting by the side of the stage and couldn't hear the vocals, but they still blew me the fuck away. Their rhythm section is what made them so great, as the groove of the bass lines flowed so weell with the insane drumming (I thought the guy used double bass until I looked and saw he only had one bass drum beater). The crowd was begging for an encore from this heavy as all fuck band as soon as they left the stage, and Torche obliged by playing a Floor cover.

Due to the fact that it was close to 1 when Torche ended, the crowd had thinned out considerably by the time The Sword took the stage, although there were still about 100 people standing up front and dedicatedly bandging their heads to the beat (as well as maybe 75 other people hanging out near the bar and pool tables-this was a very packed show). The Sword delivered with a killer set that had my head automatically nodding to the beat. They didn't move all that much on stage, but the shoulder length hair consistently covering the guitarists and bassist's hfaces made for a cool look. Their singer sounded a bit like Danzing (pointed out to be my Chan), which made for a strong voice coming from a dude who didn't look to weigh more than 110 pounds (he has a set of pipes though). Either way, The Sword is fucking great, both live and on record. They only played about a 25 minute set, and I left before their last song, but I was still highly impressed.
