Between the Buried and Me, The Red Chord, Cephalic Carnage, The End
The Station in Portland, ME
August 3, 2007

Due to tons of traffic (mostly because jerk offs had to slow down to a near stop to see an accident on the southbound highway), getting lost and leaving late, we missed The End and Cephalic Carnage. I wanted to see The End, but I could live with missing them, but I was really bummed about missing Cephalic Carnage.

The Red Chord played a damn near flawless set. They always played well when I saw them, but they really seemed to step things up the last few times I saw them. They played mostly new stuff, songs off Clients and the recently released Prey for Eyes, which sounded great. They played one song (its been awhile since I last listened to Clients, but I didn't recognize it) that had an awesome build up in the middle, led by bass drum, and their new songs sounded tremendous. They only played "Nihilist" and "Dreaming in Dog Years" off of Fused Together in Revolving Doors, but I was still highly impressed with their energy and talent.

Its amazing, jaw dropping and almost comical to watch Between the Buried and Me play their incredibly in depth songs with a plethora of parts with seemingly little effort. I sometimes can't believe how damn good these guys are at their instruments, and can't help but laugh at how they manage to pull this stuff off. Its like watching a gold glover make a near impossible play look routine. Because of this, they are one of the most fun metal bands to watch, and this set was no different.

Between the Buried and Me played eight songs in about an hour. I was most interested in hearing new material, of which they played two songs. The first song, which kicked off their set, took me by surprise, not giving a good chance to mentally dissect it. It sounded decent, however. The other new one, "Sum (it could have been "Sun of Nothing") of Nothing," had the drums kick into a blast beat followed by the band putting almost every style of music into the song. It was a long song, but it could be close to the best they've ever written.

SET LIST:

New Song
All Bodies
Camilla Rhodes
Shevanel Cut a Flip
Sum (Sun?) of Nothing
Backwards Marathon
Fire for a Dry Mouth
Mordecai

During their set, there was a shirtless, sweaty guy, who looked similar to the guy who hurt the Karate Kid's leg during the tournament in the first movie (I believe his name was Bobby), sitting on a ledge air drumming (pretty accurately at that), conducting, finger pointing, air guitaring and fist pumping. After awhile, he became more entertaining to watch than the band (I had a better view of him). He was kicked out of the place a few minutes later for not listening to the bouncer's plea to get off the ledge and mouthing off to said bouncer. He put up a decent fight until the bouncer put him in a sleeper hold and dragged him out to the parking lot.
