The Evens
AS220 in Providence, RI
December 13, 2006

I was on my way home from swimming and playing racquetball when I received a call from Chan telling me that The Evens were playing AS220 for the low price of $5. Not having to work until 10 the next morning (a fine break from the 6:15 that I usually there), I decided to head to the show.

I was waiting outside for Chan and Mike when The Evens started to play. I was surprised that they were the only band on the bill, but it worked out for the best as they played for over an hour. There was a real intimate atmosphere to their set: a small stage very close to the crowd with a lamp next to each member (I'm not sure if they brought them or if the lamps are the venue's), giving their set a real coffee house feel (very fitting of their music). Ian MacKaye was sitting down while playing various guitars, such as an acoustic, baritone and stand up bass. He was very open with the crowd, telling stories, encouraging sing along participation and getting everyone involved in an epic fade out chorus (the highlight of their set), and engaging in one on one conversations with people (which was sometimes on the mean side).

Amy Farina's drumming was incredible, mind blowing when you take into consideration the fact that she sang as well. She had a lot of creative fills that kept me interested and wondering what crazy thing she was going to pull out of her hat next. Her voice was also incredible, spot on during every song and with incredible range. She is one of the most talented musicians that I have seen on stage in awhile, adding so much life to each song that was played.

I was so glad that I went to this show, as it blew away the previous expectations that I had for it upon receiving the call from Chan. I took the opportunity to purchase Get Evens, which was bought from the source himself. It was really cool watching him take the time to at least briefly speak with everyone buying an album. He freely let people try out his baritone guitar, which I don't think I've ever seen any musician do, regardless of how well known they are. MacKaye did a great job of making everyone leave AS220 feeling like they mattered and they were greatly appreciated. More bands should take a page from The Evens.
