The night started out pretty damn bad, taking me almost a half hour to find a parking spot at 7:30 on a Friday night. I get to the door and was forced to leave my voice recorder with the dickhead door guy because Lupo's doesn't allow them anymore. I wouldn't have minded so much if the guy wasn't such an assface. He even yelled at some kid because he didn't have his money unfolded when he handed it to him.
The building was almost gutted, which I assumed was due to Lupo's buying out Diesel (they used to share the room with the concerts over before the dancing started). The building looked very bare, but it smelled of new wood, which is never a bad thing.
Municiapal Waste looked like it was the mid 80s and played an awesome amount of thrash metal. They kept the tempos blazing and the attitudes high, unafraid to throw an insult the crowds' way. Everything about this band is so fucking awesome that its not even funny, up to and including the Wall of Death, the guitarist talking like he could narrate "Lord of the Rings," using his crutch (he injured his leg in a mosh pit in Buffalo) as an air guitar.
Saying The Red Chord played loud would be a pretty huge understatement. Even with ear plugs, I still felt deaf after their set ended. They were a hell of a lot of fun to watch, as they are one of the most entertaining metal bands out there. They seemed to have a good time on stage (as always), a good time that included a special guest ass kissing by someone from the Gwar camp, and mini confetti poppers. Their set consisted of their classic songs off of Fused Together in Revolving Doors ("Nihilist," "Catalepsy," and "Dreaming in Dog Years"), some songs off of Clients and two new songs (one about the lack of Dunkin Donuts in the rest of the country). The new songs sounded good, a step up from Clients, leaving me eager to hear their new album.
Gwar is nothing if not highly entertaining. Their set is quite a production and a damn fun visual show (the band were in Hell) that overpowered the music at times. The costumes were great, featuring a cop, George W. Bush (in Hell because he was assinated), the Pope and a half Hitler/half Jesus. It was cool watching them squirt fake blood and cum onto the crowd, although I'll never understand why people would want to get hit with that shit. After watching someone walk by with their face stained in blood red liquid, I was glad that I enjoyed them from a distance, even though I wish I had better eye sight to clearly make out everything happening on stage.
I stayed until they left the stage, leaving the crowd pleading for an encore. I had to wait a few minutes to get my voice recorder back, but I was gone before Gwar retook the stage. The cool thing about this show was that every band sounded different. It was nice to hear diversity at a concert, especially now where, even though they are enough subgenres to make that happen, it usually doesn't.
