Rise Against, The Explosion, Most Precious Blood, A Wilhelm Scream
Axis in Boston, MA
January 4, 2005

We got there while A Wilhelm Scream was playing "Anchor End," my favorite song of theirs. I could hear it decently, though I was anxious to get in there and had to wait for Joe to hide his knife in his sock (though the bouncers never checked). A Wilhelm Scream ripped through the rest of their set, though the crowd just seemed to stand there and watch. There wasn't even much of a reaction when they mentioned the Red Sox, which I found strange. This is a band that you should be on the lookout for, as they have a huge future ahead of them.

I don't like Most Precious Blood. I think they're pretty boring and their set did nothing to deter me from that opinion.

The singer of the Explosion seemed to put on a few pounds, which is the second time that I've seen them that he looks like he gained weight. Don't get me wrong, he's still a very skinny dude, but he no longer looks like an addict (even less so than the last time I saw them).

Their set was good, but seemed to be lacking in the energy department. The crowd wasn't all that enthused, but they were pretty quiet during most of the night. It seemed like the Explosion played everything just a little bit slower than usual, but both Joe and Greg commented to me how good they were. The singer was damn funny, acting pretty drunk and saying some stuff that was knee slapping at the time but I can't remember now.

Rise Against was incredible. This was only the second time that I've seen them, but they totally blew the whole crowd at Axis away with their melodic style of punk. They played a good mix of my favorite songs, though they left out "Paper Wing" and "Rumors of My Demise Have Been Greatly Exaggerated."

I was quite surprised when they played "Swing Life Away" during their encore, with Tim saying that a lot of people requested it during their show with Bad Religion (the show was back in October but I couldn't go cause of the surgery thing), but they didn't have the time to play it then (shorter set because they weren't headlining). The crowd really loved it and sang along to every word, deservedly so as it is a great song. They ended their hour plus set with the crowd favorite "Black Masks and Gasoline." This was an incredible performance by Rise Against and I can't wait to see them again.
