I was a little worried when I stepped out of my car after arriving at the Burger King parking lot across the street from The Living Room. A group of loud, annoyingly obnoxious and stupid looking kids were walking back to their car from the club, leaving me to think that the show was cancelled for some reason. Lucky for me, it wasn't, and I didn't ahve to be bothered by those kids (not that they would have bothered me).
Aberdeen City got the show off to a sucky start. They sounded like an indie rock version of The Cure, and it bored the shit out of me. Each song was more drudging than the previous, leaving me drinking beer, watching a ball game and waiting for them to end.
I was going to talk to Murder by Death about doing an interview, but I started talking to a friend and Langhorne Slim took the stage much sooner than expected. Set up didn't take long since it was just a dude and his guitar, but I didn't know that. He did play some awesome acoustic blues with country and melodic influences. I enjoyed his powerful voice and guitar playing. I was hoping to buy some of his tunes, but all he was selling was T shirts.
Again, I was going to ask about interviewing Murder by Death, but their merch guy put up a sign saying that he was going to fight bears (drawing included). Stephen Colbert would have been proud, but their merch guy wasn't going to fight bears at all. Instead, Murder by Death was going to take the stage, meaning that I must've missed the first band.
The crowd was excited and Murder by Death put on an amazing performance. Their set sounded 1000x better than a year ago when I saw them with Against Me!, as they played with a different energy, sounding pretty damn similar to their album. Adam Turla, who looked straight out of a turn of the century Wild West saloon, really rocked the joint with his voice, even though he claimed he was losing it due to a full night of drinking (I couldn't tell). Sara Balllet rocking out on cello and keys was an incredible sight to watch. She was very into the music, and even seemed to have some choreographed body moves at times when she wasn't playing.
They played a great mix of songs from their catalogue, ending with an instrumental (I didn't recognize the song, but Turla didn't sing due to his voice) that was so full of energy that it became the highlight of an already amazing set. This is a band worth checking out at all costs. They played an amazing set that blew me out of the water.
