Deftones
Lupo's in Providence, RI
June 6, 2007

The Deftones show arrived with less hype than I’d usually have reserved for getting to see them. Maybe it’s this getting-older crap, and by show’s end I essentially can confirm this. Good crowd for the headliner, and whatever pile of waste that played before them got a warm reception (I will say that The Fall of Troy are a pretty good band, though I have yet to hear their new album) . I held out until the band’s finish before applauding, being that such a thing of beauty (or not) deserved to not be interrupted.

There was a constant watch-check during intermission + setup for Deftones, no more than thirty minutes before they were on. And, they were “on” for the whole set.

There seemed to be less interaction with the crowd this time from the numerous times I’ve seen them before. Still, they connect with the audience well and still execute songs from their earlier albums without having lost a step. Many of their popular tracks from Adrenaline ("Bored," "Root," "7 Words") were included in the 21-song set. Yes, this is the most I’ve ever seen them play in a night. A few surrounding drunks were pleading and cursing to have their favorite ‘Adrenaline’ songs played, as if no other album existed in their history. For the most part, I heard what I wanted to ("Beware," "Around the Fur," "Passenger") and a few surprises were thrown in (Rickets, Rats Rats Rats!, and Nosebleed). Not necessarily my favorites but they sound better live.

I don’t believe the club was filled to capacity, but it was also a “school night” which could have made a difference, or possibly the steep price ($30). Neither was a deterrent for me, but I really am getting too old for this. When some drunk skinhead wants to hug you with his beer and others command a 3 foot radius to dance with their arm over their face, they ought to check my ID and send me home. Otherwise, it’s the same Deftones touring off their 2006 album and packing a bunch of music into a set that ran for about 90 minutes. A steep price to pay for a club show but well worth it.
