Armor for Sleep, Boys Night Out, Chiodis, Action Reaction, The Quiet Life
The Living Room in Providence, RI
March 17, 2006

Sarah and I got there a few minutes before The Quiet Life got onstage, following up an announcement of license plate numbers of cars that would be towed if their owners didn't move them from the connected Dunkin Donuts parking lot. I had never heard of this band before, but I really enjoyed them. They had a relaxing indie country folk rock thing going, which I very much dug. There were parts of aggression and also an intro that sounded like "Jenny" from Tommy Tutone. The Quiet Life is definitely a band that I will be keeping tabs on, as they were a great way to kick off the show.

After interviewing Armor for Sleep, we walked back intot he club as Action Reaction was goofing off on stage, sound checking to "My Humps" by Black Eyed Peas. I really dislike that song, even moreso after I found out that Black Eyed Peas wrote it, most likely to super cash in on a non message wanting audience. When Action Reaction started playing their own songs, they were pretty decent. They have a unique way of songwriting, using a megaphone and a few percussion instruments to add to their already complex song structures. Jason Gleason truly has an amazing vocal range, which he displayed a lot during their set.

I found a couple songs boring, but I enjoyed them for the most part, and I especially liked how their drummer looking uncannily like a sound guy who works at The Living Room (minus the dreads), and how the keyboardist looked like an old boss I had.

Chiodis had a vry interesting intro, with song backwards sounding thing talking about raging boners and shit porn as a strobe light flashed. To make that sort of funny (it really wasn't funny at all), was the fact that a lot of parents were in the audience, no doubt wondering what the hell is wrong with their children.

Chiodis played a really killer set. The guitar and keyboard lines sounded so good live, standing out from the rest of the band. They had a lot of on stage energy and the crowd was singing along and loving them. I hope these guys don't get sick of Rhode Island, since they still have to play this state twice more in the next couple of months.

Boys Night Out was sadly disappointing. I've seen them play live three times before, and this was by far the worst set I've seen from them. The band energy was nonexistent, even though they were jumping around the stage like kids taking sugar instead of Ritalin.

I realized a few songs into their set that they were playing everything slower than normal, which brough upon the energy-less sound. Each song could ahve been at least a few beats per minute faster, which would have made for a much better performance. I was happy that they played "Relapsing" and "Composing."

Armor for Sleep was really good, even though the crowd had thinned out by the time they got on stage. They played with a lot of energy, but I was so tired that I left half way into their set, wondering why my eyes don't want to stay open after 11:30 on a Friday, afraid of the inevitable getting old.
